Tío Tours breaks down a few of the exciting events taking place in Madrid in May 2025.

May in Madrid is simply Magical. The city becomes a vibrant tapestry of history, culture, music, and tradition. Whether you're a local or a visitor, the city offers an array of events that really immerse you into the city's culture and history. Here's a curated list of six standout happenings in Madrid this May 2025:

1. Dos de Mayo Celebrations (May 1–4)

Commemorating the 1808 uprising against French occupation, the Dos de Mayo festivities are a blend of historical reverence and modern celebration. The Explanada de Puente del Rey and the Royal Palace become the epicenter of activities, featuring a grand historical reenactment with over a hundred actors, horses, and period costumes, vividly bringing to life the defense of the Monteleón artillery barracks. Complementing the reenactments are traditional dances by groups like Arrabel and Francisco de Goya, and concerts by artists such as Carolina Durante and Camela. Check out the website to know exactly where to be!

2. San Isidro Festival (Around May 15)

Honoring Madrid's patron saint, San Isidro Labrador, this festival is a deep dive into the city's rich traditions. The Pradera de San Isidro park transforms into a lively fairground with locals donning traditional "chulapo" attire, dancing the chotis, and indulging in classic treats like rosquillas. The festivities encompass parades, open-air concerts, and religious processions, offering a comprehensive experience of Madrid's cultural heritage. Keep an eye on the website as the official program will be released on the 6th of May.

3. Day Trip to La Granja de San Ildefonso

La Granja de San Ildefonso is a serene escape into royal history. The town is home to the Royal Palace, often dubbed the "Spanish Versailles," renowned for its intricate gardens and monumental fountains. Visitors can also explore the Royal Glass Factory, which showcases traditional glassblowing techniques. Guided tours are available, providing insights into the palace's art collections and the town's historical significance. May is the perfect time to venture to this splendid palace, with generally sunny days that aren't too overpowering yet. My recommendation, check the website to see when the fountains are on as these are the highlight of the palace (the move 250 litres of water per second)! To get there by public transport, one must take the Avanza bus service to Segovia from Moncloa. From Segovia, the site is a 20 minute bus ride. Ask the staff at the Segovia bus station and they'll get you on the right bus!

4. Feria Medieval de El Álamo (May 1–4)

Step back in time at the 28th edition of the Medieval Fair in El Álamo, located just 37 kilometers from Madrid. The town's streets are transformed into a medieval marketplace, complete with artisans, jesters, and knights. Highlights include jousting tournaments, musical performances, and traditional crafts. Recognized as a Regional Tourist Interest Festival, it attracts over 300,000 visitors annually. To get to El Álamo, take the 539 bus that departs from the Principe Pio interchange. The journey should last around 60 minutes.

5. Feria del Libro Antiguo y de Ocasión (May 1–18)

Book enthusiasts will delight in the 47th edition of this antique and second-hand book fair held along the Paseo de Recoletos, right in the heart of Madrid. With 37 specialized bookstores participating, attendees can browse a vast collection ranging from affordable paperbacks to rare first editions and manuscripts.

6. Universal Music Festival (May 22–June 8)

Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the Universal Music Festival returns to the iconic UMusic Hotel Teatro Albéniz. The lineup boasts a mix of national and international artists, including Rosario, María Terremoto, Chambao, and Paloma San Basilio. The festival promises immersive experiences with themed settings, gourmet food trucks, and a vibrant atmosphere that has captivated over 50,000 attendees in previous editions. Get your tickets quickly though, most of the artists will sell out!
