Tío Tours. Not from Madrid, but made for it.

Whether you stumbled upon us through a quick Google search, Instagram, or a recommendation, I am excited to share my love for Madrid with you. My name is Nic and I am the founder of Tío Tours. I started this company after living in Madrid for two years in which I fell in love with this city and its people. I decided to combine my passion for history, people, and adventure to create Tío Tours. Tío Tours is more than just a free walking tour company - it is an experience.

So who am I? Well, like I mentioned before my name is Nic. I am an Australian expat who took a risk coming to Spain and has never turned back. In my previous experiences, I worked in sales, retail, and even DJ’d. Through these endeavours, I was able to encounter a diverse range of people daily which developed an inner curiosity for the world and people that inhabit it. I learned how to manage different perspectives and expectations, valuable skills in a rapidly changing world. BUT, Australia is a very far-away place and I knew after 24 years of living there I needed to experience something new. Coming to Spain, not to be cheesy, changed my life. I began my journey as a primary school English teacher where the kids teased me by calling me “Calvo” (the Spanish word for bald) daily. Despite their remarks, I absolutely adored my time teaching those cheeky buggers and seeing their educational growth spurred on through my teaching brought real purpose to my start here in Spain. Throughout these past two years, I’ve met some of the best friends I could have asked for, traveled to unbelievable places, and met the love of my life. I began to realise what I truly enjoyed about being here and that was people, travel, and education. Now, I am blending those three passions to continue educating and fostering a worldwide community right here in Madrid.

During my travels around Europe, I encountered the idea of a free walking tour, and from the first one, I was hooked. The premise is simple. You meet with a guide at a starting point and they walk you around their city for about 2 hours. Along the way, the guide tells you the story of the city with peculiarities past and present. Coupled with local recommendations and interesting “did-you-knows,” the experience is immersive and fun. The fascinating aspect of the free walking tour is that they are, well, FREE (kinda). The guide is determined to give you the best experience possible because, at the end of the tour, you decide how much it was worth. The greatest feature of free walking tours is how accessible they are to a variety of travelers. Some of my favorite travel memories have been meeting an eclectic array of people on walking tours, and indeed the mischief we got up to together after the tour (*cough cough* London Underground Karaoke Bar in Prague, I’m looking at you).

So what makes Tío Tours unique? Well, other than being the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide around town (and also a native English speaker), our first product, the Madrid - Medieval to Modern walking tour, is structured in such a way that it walks you literally right from the very beginnings of Madrid as a city and discusses all the major historical time periods right up to the Madrid of today. Along the way, you’ll get to know the fellow guests of the tour, but also many of the characters who shaped Madrid into what it is to this day. Your tour won’t really even end at the conclusion of the tour. You’ll have learned so many interesting things about the city that you’ll be keeping your eyes peeled during the rest of your stay in Madrid (that I can guarantee)!

Well now that you’ve decided to join us, let's give you the vital information. Our free walking tour departs from the Plaza de la Armería, which is the big square nestled between the Royal Palace and the Cathedral. The tours depart twice daily, but do check the website for departure times as the times differentiate between different seasons. The tour lasts around 2 hours and 20 minutes, and will run in any weather condition, rain, hail or shine (good job it’s often sunny in Madrid). For now, the tour is only available in English, but who knows, expansion is hopefully just around the corner! For more information, check our the tour page here - Tours
